The ‘people’s doctor’, Zuleiga Jaffer (or Dr.Julie as she is fondly known) was politically conscientised from a young age and began performing acts of resistance as a young schoolgirl in the 1960s, all through her studies at UCT where the racism toward black medical students was overt and legal. Julie paints a picture of what it was like to be a medical student in the 1970s. She later used her medical practice to serve the community, juggling that with active involvement in establishing various organisations such as UWCO, the UDF and later the ANC and ANC Women's League after the organisaitons were unbanned.
